Too true.

To me, the main strength of SysV init is its hackcessibility (to use a term related to "hactivation energy", coined, if memory serves, by Tom Lord).

It's ugly (and I'll never understand at which point it departed of the BSD approach of watching its children: remember respawn?)

What I'd like would be some evolution of SysV, equally shell-oriented, but with a more intelligent management of running services -- not an all-integrated black box with DBUS activation and all that. Does something like that exist?

You should have a look at the systemd.confirm_spawn kernel option:

http://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/systemd.html#systemd.confirm_spawn=

Adding systemd.confirm_spawn=true to the kernel command line will get you mostly the desired behaviour. From the systemd manpage:

Don't leave us hanging; what was the init script that broke when you added a second processor?

I usually read your blog on google reader, from Debian Planet. Today I clicked on it so I could read the comments of this interesting post, then I realized that black text on this grass background is really difficult to read. Just a tip
