Fuck you, Sony.

I had wanted to buy a PS3 ever since I learned about this interesting processor that is called the Cell. Not that I'm very much into console gaming or any such thing; I'd have settled for any kind of affordable Cell hardware, really, but that basically is 'the PS3' these days.

What I had missed, however, was the fact that recent PS3 machines don't support running Linux anymore. Apparently this was all over the interwebs, but unfortunately I didn't see that.

That's €300 I won't see again, for a useless (to me) piece of hardware.

Stupid morons.

So, you're blaming sony for your not reading enough about a 300€ product?
You bought what is advertised a game console with a bluray player nothing more nothing less.

i'm pained to say this but you deserved it. supporting companies that actively fight and deny users' rights is not only bad for you but it hurts everyone else in the long run. sony like many other big companies proactively fights legal hacking of their products with what can only be seen as monopolistic intents. my advice? from now on only spend your money in open or standard technology, favoring companies and products that are friendly to free software and abstain from the latest hypes, and formally complain upstream about bad practices (ie, not just in your blog but also to the maker and at the store when returning the product for a refund when it doesn't meet your needs).

it's not a perfect solution, and it certainly won't fix all your problems, but positive reinforcement in large enough dosages has been proven to work very well

Possibly I've missed something obvious, but can't you just return the PS3?

I think you might find some people willing to trade a previous generation PS3 for the slim...

I don't like sony either, I don't even buy DVD/CD published by them. Turning away from linux support probably motivate the linux hacker to make some modchip. The reason why there aren't any modchips sofar, were the fact, that linux was supported...

This is actually great.. I bet someone wanted to get the PS3 hacked now when they ditched Linux. In the console crowd both Wii and Xbox 360 have been hacked (unfortunatly not as pwn3d as the first Xbox but still), so PS3 is lagging behind in that area. Linux will once again run on the PS3, that much is certain.

The four repliess so far seem reasonable. But Sony is stupidly moronic. They have form. Making Sony DVD players region-free is much harder than other brands, for example. They love proprietary lock-in; it's in the Sony DNA of massive vertical integration. Their memory cards, those little recordable CDs ...

Surely it can be made to run Linux again? It's a CPU, there's some memory inside and presumably something like persistent storage or networking. It won't be trivial to port the previous port to the new generation you've got, but it shouldn't be "impossible" either.
