Incomplete blog feeds.
I'm considering to remove feeds from Planet Grep a few weeks from now that do not contain the entire text of the post in their feed; i.e., those feeds for which it is necessary to go to the blog itself to read it. The reason is that I want Planet Grep something which you can read, not just a bunch of links to other people's sites. By having only teasers, or (in some cases) not even that, this breaks.
Thoughts?
well, I had to come over to this blog from planet grep in order to post this comment... :-p
but you are right. these incomplete feeds are annoying.
what about the 'title only' feeds, like the one from Philip Paeps?
I'd like to get rid of those too, of course. They're just as incomplete as the rest of them.
Maybe it is a good idea to offer two RSS feeds: one with full posts and one with headlines only.
Then I could (just an example) subscribe to the 'full feed' with not-constantly-online devices. For devices that are online all the time, the 'headlines only' feed would be ok because you can follow the links if you want. (IF the links work of course, which is not always the case!)
Why would this be a good idea? I want to read everything on one page, rather than having to click on links all the time. The latter is too cumbersome. If you want to use the RSS feed as part of your website and want to see only the teasers there, that's still possible if you have everything in the feed. It isn't if you drop part of the content
Well, just because I like to read (or at least, scan) everyting. So it would be a pity if some of the planet feed submitters would go away.
So do I. It's the main reason why I'm considering to enforce this policy; I don't want to have to load thirty-three pages just to be able to read Planet Grep. I'm sorry, but I don't see why it's better to work with partial feeds.
"I don't want to have to load thirty-three pages just to be able to read Planet Grep"
Well, personally, I don't mind to quickly open these pages in new tabs... But I do appreciate your reasoning also.
The real solution is of course that all the feeds start offering complete content.
That indeed is the real solution. In fact, it's the whole point of starting this exercise. Obviously, I can't force people to put everything in their feed, but I can tell them that the only way they'll remain on Planet Grep is by following some rules. Which would include 'You must provide a full feed'
