Actually, I did the same thing once myself. The difference between Carlo and myself was that in my case, only a few files that were not in backup had been deleted, rather than 3G worth of data; hence, using a hex editor, a cursory glance at the Linux source code, and a few hours to kill was all that was needed to recover.

Spot on -- most likely, after an initial day of frustration and restless night, you come to realize that a few files and thus a hex editor are all that is needed, and start to feel relieved about all the free space you have available to (re)fill now
